7 Design Details That Instantly Upgrade Your Space

June 30, 2025

It’s not always about a full makeover. Sometimes, the tiniest changes—those unexpected, soulful, or simply joyful details can breathe new life into your space. Here are a few ideas to get you inspired:

1. Original Artwork (Not Just Another Matisse Knock-Off)

Ditch the mass-produced abstract prints and overplayed tributes to Matisse. Instead, seek out work by local artists or independent illustrators whose style genuinely resonates with you. Whether it’s a bold ink sketch, a moody watercolor, or a whimsical print, original art gives your space personality and story. Into maximalism? Punkhaus offers striking, unapologetic pieces that make a statement. More of a flea-market-and-DIY type? Try customizing thrifted artwork with a splash of paint like I did (see image below, the Venus poster is also from my home). It’s affordable, fun, and totally one of a kind.

2. Statement Hardware

Think beyond the purely functional. Cabinet knobs, curtain tiebacks, and even toilet paper holders are all opportunities for style. Door handles are the easiest place to start, and stores like Zara Home often carry interesting designs. For more unusual, elevated options, Anthropologie is my go-to for hardware that feels curated and artistic rather than industrial.

3. Easy Furniture Upgrades (Think: IKEA Hacks, But Chic)

You don’t need to buy new furniture to give your space a refresh. Swapping out legs, handles, or even adding textured panels to a basic IKEA piece can turn something mass-produced into something unique. A plain Kallax unit, for example, can look high-end with fluted fronts or cane inserts. Brands like Artvoom, Superfront, or Peel offer gorgeous ready-made upgrades—or go DIY with peel-and-stick wood slats and bold paint. Minimal effort, major glow-up.

4. Add a Vintage or Antique Piece (Yes, Even Just One)

In a world of flat-packed furniture and Instagram trends, one vintage or antique find can shift the entire vibe of a room. It could be a small side table, a brass candlestick, a ceramic lamp, or even a wooden stool with patina. These pieces tell a story, break up the newness, and give your space that unrepeatable quality that makes interiors memorable. And no, it doesn’t have to be expensive! Try local flea markets (Encants or Mercantic if you live in Barcelona!), Facebook Marketplace, or architectural salvage stores.
The images below show a thrifted telephone table in my Barcelona place, and a mid-century vinyl cabinet from Line’s apartment.

5. Bring in Texture (And Stop Relying on Flat Fabrics)

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more considered is to layer textures. Swap out plain cotton cushion covers or curtains for materials with more presence – like bouclé, raw silk, velvet, or block-printed linen. Textured fabrics add depth and warmth, even when you’re sticking to a neutral palette. For the bold, don’t be afraid to mix: a nubby wool throw over a crisp linen sofa? Yes, please.

6. Mirror as a Statement Piece

More than just practical, a mirror can act as art. Try styles with beaded frames, wavy outlines, or squiggly edges. They reflect light and personality. Bonus: mirrors visually expand small spaces, making them a great trick for entryways or nooks.

7. Add One Unexpected Object

Every space needs a little punctuation mark — something that doesn’t quite “go,” but somehow works. A playful vintage figurine, an artful candleholder, or even a slightly odd vase can disrupt the expected and add just the right amount of intrigue.
