CEVISAMA, Spain’s leading ceramic tile exhibition, is the place to discover the latest innovations in tile design. This year, the trends were bold, textured, and full of personality. Looking back at my trend overview of CEVISAMA 2023, there is a notable shift in styles and influences. So let’s dive into the top 7 ceramic tile trends straight from the expo, which I had the chance to visit in person, thanks to Valencia being just a three-hour train ride from Barcelona!
1. XXL Tiles – Bigger Is Better?
Large-format tiles have been dominating the scene in wall slabs for a while now (think 120×260 cm or even larger!) as they create a sleek, seamless look with minimal grout lines. But now there are increasingly more XXL floor tiles imitating traditional square-shaped terracotta and cement tiles. Personally, my brain feels a bit confused seeing these classic styles in such an oversized format—but there’s no denying they make a bold statement!

2. Three-Dimensional Tiles That Add Depth and Dimension
Textured tiles are making a big impact, with sculptural, 3D effects bringing walls to life. From soft waves and geometric reliefs to organic, nature-inspired textures, these tiles add a play of light and shadow that enhances any space. They work beautifully in accent walls, showers, or even kitchen backsplashes, offering a striking alternative to flat surfaces.

3. Matte Finishes Are Huge – and we will definitely be seeing more of the Matte & Gloss Combo
Matte tiles are stealing the spotlight this year, delivering a sophisticated yet restrained look that feels both modern and timeless. But what’s even more exciting? The ceramic tile trend of mixing matte and glossy finishes within the same tile. This contrast creates eye-catching depth and texture, making designs feel more dynamic and refined. Different textures mixed in one object are a general trend, so it is safe to see we will be seeing more of such mixes in the upcoming years.

4. Geometric Patterns – Fresh and Creative Twists
Geometry remains a major design trend, and tile manufacturers continue to find innovative ways to incorporate circles, triangles, lines, and other geometric shapes into their designs. We’re seeing unexpected angles, asymmetrical patterns, and bold, multi-tone compositions. Whether used for statement walls or playful floors, geometric tiles add energy and personality to any interior.

5. Rough Textures – From Rustic to Luxury
Tiles with rough, tactile surfaces are making waves this year, offering an authentic, handcrafted feel and look. These textures range from worn, weathered finishes for a rustic vibe to sophisticated, stone-like surfaces that exude luxury. They’re perfect for adding warmth and character to both modern and traditional spaces, proving that imperfection can be beautiful.

6. Mix-and-Match Styles for a Bold, Personalized Look
While the color palette continues to lean toward neutral tones, mix-and-match remains a perfect way to add playfulness to tiled surfaces. Whether it’s blending different tile shapes on the same wall, pairing plain tiles with intricate patterns, or combining natural stone effects with bold color pops, this trend offers endless possibilities for customization.

7. Cyan, Teal, Blue-Green Shades – The Color Trend to Watch!
From deep teal to soft aqua, blue-green shades are taking over the tile world. These colors evoke a sense of calm, nature, and sophistication, making them a great choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces. Whether in glossy, glazed finishes for a vibrant look or matte, stone-like textures for a more organic feel, these tones and their mixes are everywhere and show no signs of fading away.

👀 Bonus Trend: Roman Mosaic Revival?
It may not be a mainstream trend yet, but Roman-inspired mosaic tiles are starting to make an appearance. They feature prominently in the latest collection from Mainzu, one of the leading brands in the Spanish market, which makes me think we may see more of this style in the years to come. It’s definitely a trend to watch!

Final Thoughts
CEVISAMA 2024 showcased a mix of innovation and tradition, with trends that cater to both minimalists and maximalists. Whether you love the sleekness of XXL tiles, the boldness of 3D surfaces, or the charm of textured, mix-and-match styles, there’s something for everyone in the world of ceramics this year.
